  onions shallots

Q: If a recipe calls for shallots, can I use onions?

A: Shallots, a member of the onion family, are slightly milder in flavor than onions and lack the sulfurous bite of their larger cousings. You can, however, substitute minced onions for shallots; just be aware that the flavor will be a little stronger. A mixture of green onions and onions would be another good substitute.
