When preparing a meal, the last thing you want to deal with is a burn caused by accidentally grabbing a too-hot pot or pan. The potential for mishap is especially great when preparing a recipe that starts in the oven and finishes on the stovetop (such as when making a pan sauce). Here's a trick chefs use to prevent harming their hands:

Sprinkle the handle with flour right after putting the pan on the stovetop. The flour is a visual signal that the pan needs to be handled with a potholder or towel.
