To add a floral garnish to cakes and other baked goods, head for the pantry, not the garden. Gumdrops, rolled flat and sculpted, make sweet, colorful blooms. Here's how:
Lightly dust a countertop or cutting board and a rolling pin or your fingers with powdered sugar. Roll or press small gumdrops until they're flat and very thin. Hold the flattened gumdrop with your fingers and pinch the center to form a flower. Bend and shape the edges of the gumdrop to create petals. To make a center for the gumdrop flower, take a small piece from another flattened gumdrop in a contrasting color and roll it into a tiny ball. Place it in the center of the flower. Sprinkle the flower with granulated sugar, if you like, and place it on the frosted cake.
To create softer-colored flowers, press a white gumdrop and a colored gumdrop together until combined.
