Storing Cilantro - Question of the Week 7-5-10
You asked; the experts answer.

Q: Whenever I buy cilantro, I end up throwing most of it away because it turns black. How should I store it to make it last longer?

A: Exposure to air and moisture can cause cilantro to deteriorate. Proper storage will extend its life. Remove any rubber bands or twist ties, unwrap the bundle and discard any stems that look wilted. Trim the bottoms of the remaining stems and place them in a jar of water. Then cover the cilantro and jar with a plastic bag and store upright in the refrigerator. You also can wrap the stems in a slightly damp towel or paper towel, place them in a plastic bag and store in the refrigerator; remove as much air as possible before sealing the bag. Stored these ways, cilantro will last a few days.

Because too much moisture causes the leaves to deteriorate quickly, it’s best to wash cilantro just before you use it.

This is a wonderful tip for me, as I am the only one in my household that eats Cilantro. I will do this from now on. Thank you.

The best way to have cilantro fresh all the time is using coriander seeds planted in a pot and kept in the kitchen. You can grow fresh cilantro and have it fresh all the time! =)

Thanks for the wonderful tips on keeping cilantro fresh, it really works! I usually throw most of it away because it goes to waste before I use it all. Thanks for the save, saves me money and now I think I will grow mine that's a great ideal!

I would love some tips on growing cilantro. I do it every year, but it turns into coriander so fast, I would have to re-seed or buy plants several times a summer in order to have fresh cilantro all the time. I live in Wisconsin, so have a very limited growing season.

When it comes to herbs, I like to use fresh but we all know they can go bad quichly. But when I buy fresh I store as in paper towel in refg. Then in a day or two. I wash and place in plastic freezer bag and freeze. I also use this method at the end of the year for all my herbs from the garden. This way I have herbs for cooking and making pesto in the winter.

I grow fresh herbs year-round in wine barrels. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but it saves me time and money from going to the store when ever I need fresh herbs. I the winter time, I just grow the annuals that won't last outside during the cold in the kitchen from seeds collected from the plants. This way I have year-round herbs almost cost free.
