Q: What is Thai basil?
A: Thai basil is one of the characteristic flavors of Southeast Asia. It's similar to standard basil, except it has purple-tinged leaves and an additional cinnamon flavor.
When choosing a bunch, avoid wilted leaves. Once home, trim the stems, put them in water and place the container on a windowsill, where it will stay fresh for days. Do not refrigerate it.
The flavors of Thai basil fade when cooked. Often it's combined with mint and cilantro. It's used raw in simple salads, Vietnamese salad rolls or added to soup or Thai curry just before serving.
