Question of the Week 5-23-11
What is Thai basil?

Q:
What is Thai basil?

A: Thai basil is one of the characteristic flavors of Southeast Asia. It's similar to standard basil, except it has purple-tinged leaves and an additional cinnamon flavor.

When choosing a bunch, avoid wilted leaves. Once home, trim the stems, put them in water and place the container on a windowsill, where it will stay fresh for days. Do not refrigerate it.

The flavors of Thai basil fade when cooked. Often it's combined with mint and cilantro. It's used raw in simple salads, Vietnamese salad rolls or added to soup or Thai curry just before serving.

This is also known as Cinnamon Basil. You can sometimes find the plants at your local garden center as Cinnamon Basil. I love to buy the different kinds of herbs. I have a basil that has red leaves which adds color and flavor. I also have other herbs that have differnt flavors other than the regular flavor such as Pineapple Sage. Some of these plants are large so be sure that you have the space to let them grow. Some can be propagated by cuttings and some have to be multiplied by seeds. My Spearmint has long runners. I have it in a pot as it is very invasive but am propagating more in another pot. I also have Greek Oregano which has pale green leaves with white edges. If you need to know more about growing herbs then go to the website of National Home Gardening at http://www.gardeningclub.com/. Enjoy your adventure of herbs.

I love this basil with fresh tomatoes, olive oil and mozzarella cheese. It is a nice twist from the basic basil. I grow it each spring in a container on my back deck. My kids and husband make what they call a "basil bomb". A fresh leaf wrapped around a freshly picked tomato. Nothing says spring like basil.
