Q:
What are hearts of palm?

A: Hearts of palm, palmito in Portuguese, are the inner portion of the stem of the palm tree. Somewhat akin to artichoke hearts in flavor, they're a delicacy in Brazil and used in salads and main dishes.

You can find cans or jars of hearts of palm in the canned vegetable section; most are imported from Brazil.

Some have a more tougher skin like. Am I suppose to take that off or use it? Or is it the quality of the brand?

For those of an adventurous nature the heart of a palmetto bush can also be used in the same manner. Several restaurants in Cedar Key, FL serve a heart of palm salad with a dollop of lime sherbet. Calhoun if it was me I would remove the tough outer skin.

I love heart of palms, as a child i would eat them in argentina. We used to add a sauce to it which was based with a bit of mayo and ketchup. Just enough to add an extra kick. Also with salads are really good.

I grew up eating hearts of palm, my mom always put them on her antipasto. I still so the same.
