Sweet and sour meet up in this intoxicating sauce for grilled chicken. Cloves are the surprise ingredient, lending a subtle, complementary accent to the plum mixture. The sauce easily can be made a day ahead and refrigerated until you’re ready to grill.
1/4 cup chili sauce
1/4 cup plum preserves
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon red wine vinegar
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Dash ground cloves
2 bone-in chicken breast halves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1. Heat grill. Combine all ingredients except chicken and salt in small saucepan; cook over medium heat 3 to 5 minutes or until sauce has thickened slightly and preserves have melted, stirring occasionally. Reserve half of the sauce.
2. Sprinkle chicken with salt. Grill, covered, skin-side down, over medium heat or coals 8 to 10 minutes; turn. Spoon sauce over chicken; grill 10 to 15 minutes or until no longer pink in center. Serve with reserved sauce.
